Most patients describe the procedure as very tolerable thanks to local anesthesia, which keeps you comfortable throughout.

Some mild tenderness or tightness may be present in the first few days after surgery, but it typically resolves quickly. Over-the-counter pain relief and Dr. Kolstad’s detailed aftercare instructions help make recovery smooth and manageable.

Most of Dr. Kolstad’s beard transplants are completed in a single session lasting several hours, depending on the number of grafts being placed. You’ll also return for follow-up visits so Dr. Kolstad can monitor healing and results.

In some cases, patients may choose an optional touch-up procedure further to refine the density or shape of their beard.

Initial results start to appear around three months after your beard transplant, as new follicles begin producing visible hair.

Over the following months, density and texture continue to improve, with most patients seeing their full, mature results around one year after the procedure.

Absolutely. Many Kolstad Facial Plastic Surgery patients combine their beard transplant with our eyebrow or scalp hair transplants, too, for added hair density in other places as well.

During your consultation, Dr. Kolstad will review your goals and recommend a treatment plan that safely integrates multiple procedures while maintaining natural, seamless results.

Risks that can be seen with a beard transplant may include temporary redness, swelling, minor bruising, or mild discomfort in the donor or recipient areas. In rare cases, some patients might experience infection, scarring, or uneven hair growth, but these are rather uncommon.

Following all post-procedure instructions and attending follow-up visits helps ensure smooth healing and optimal results.

At Kolstad Hair Restoration in San Diego, we offer both FUT and FUE beard transplants. The difference between the two procedures is how the hair grafts are removed from the back of the head. FUT refers to the process of removing a strip of scalp from the back of the head to obtain the grafts. Using state-of-the-art Neograft technology, hair grafts can also be removed one at a time during an FUE procedure.

Dr. Kolstad will help guide you and explain the differences between FUT and FUE facial hair transplants. If you have long hair or have a strip scar from a previous procedure, you may be a better candidate for FUT. If you do not have scars on the back of your head and prefer to wear your hair short, FUE may be the best method for graft extraction.

The number of donor grafts required varies significantly from individual to individual. Full beard transplants can take 2,000 grafts to create. Adding fullness to areas of patchy thinning can require anywhere from 500 to 1,500 grafts. Goatees and mustache transplants typically require around 750 to 1,200 hair grafts.
