What is Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
This method involves the removal of a strip of actively growing hair from the back of the scalp, usually a 2-inch x 10-inch section. A scalpel is used to excise the strip and the incision is closed in multiple layers. Following excision, the strip of scalp is then sectioned into individual hair follicular units. Each follicular unit consists of a hair follicle, 1-4 hair shafts, and surrounding connective tissue.
For many patients looking to restore a frontal hairline a session of 2,000 – 2,500 micrografts is recommended. If temporal loss is the only area being treated sometimes smaller sessions of 1,000 to 1,500 grafts can get the job done. Restoring the posterior scalp can require as many as 2,000 to 4,000 grafts.
